Epic pizza in Earlsfield

I don’t often order pizza at a restaurant. Inevitably you are left feeling somewhat ripped off at the generic sameness of flavour of the various options, and a bit bloated by bready dough that dominates what is on the plate. But that changed over the weekend.

On Saturday evening we missed our reservation at a Korean restaurant that had been recommended to us, so went in search of an alternative (it was well after 9pm by then) and stopped at La Pernella in Earlsfield. It was a good move.

You know you’re at an authentic Italian style restaurant when the host looks as though he wants to give you a hug and punch you in face at the same time. We were welcomed by a hearty, bellowed greeting in Italian from the chef manning the wood burning pizza oven.

I am no restaurant critic so will keep this short. I ordered the Scapricciatella which is topped with tomato, mozzarella, basil, olive oil, salami, mushrooms, olives, ham and artichokes. The base was perfect, crisp and light with enough body that it required you to chew. And unlike most pizza bases, it actually had some flavour of its own! Toppings were generous but not over the top and each element was distinguishable on its own. Perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious.

The waiter was great and our pizzas were washed down with a decent bottle of house red wine.

Without a doubt the best pizza that I have had since I’ve been in London, and a place that I will definitely return to with a bit more time on my hands. I will be back.

As our waiter told us, throughout May they are celebrating their 15th year in operation and have a great special available for tables of four or more. Check it out.

Sounds divine! Did you have your Thai-paired BYO wine with you and what did you choose? Love to try it when we visit (when we win the Lotto…)

Nope. I was going to go with a bottle of Millione, actually!
