It’s a blend of what?

One of the most interesting combinations I have tasted in a while was on the young guns pod at the Wines of South Africa stand at the London International Wine Fair yesterday. Produced under the brand Elemental Bob, the wine is called The Turkish.

It’s  blend of the classic Italian red grape Barbera and the lightly pink-skinned fragrantly spicy grape Gewürztraminer. The wines (there’s apparently another called The Delight) are made by Craig Sheard, the winemaker at Spookfontein in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. It’s an intriguing wine, with a character that you would expect from the two varietals in the blend. There’s soft supple cherry fruit with a bit of sweetness on the finish and it is all lifted by a floral spice and aroma of wild honey. Odd, but weirdly enjoyable.

I’ll have to try it again today.
