Tapas Fantasticas

It is a beautiful weekend in London, the first clear, warm weekend of the English summer. Everyone is firmly in the grip of the old England vs Germany football rivalry that will be resuming today, so we’ll be having a quiet one at home. Of course we’ll have the braai going – that’s a given!

Yesterday I spent a few hours in Pottersfield Park at Tapas Fantasticas. This event is a showcase for Rioja, both its wines and its food. Whites, Rosés and delicious reds all interspersed with a range of tapas stalls. It was time well spent, with some great Spanish music setting the mood for a relaxed and interesting afternoon. With it being a warm day, many of Rioja’s fantastic reds were a bit too warm, so I stuck with whites, a couple of rosés and then a few chilled reds, which were really delicious. The Crianza from Dinastía Vivanco was one of these, poured on the day by Robert MacIntosh, a real Rioja disciple.

We had also booked a couple of seats at a short tasting seminar, conducted by the self-proclaimed cross between Boris Johnson and Matt Lucas, Jolly Olly Smith. This was a really enjoyable half hour introduction to Rioja. We tasted through five wines as Olly passionately described the region and the provenance that is evident in its wines. My favourite of the tasting was the 100% Tempranillo Baron de Ley Reserva 2005. I will be a very satisfied diner if I had a couple of bottles of this wine to enjoy with my meal. At £9.99 I will be stopping in at the Co-op for a bit of that some time.

Hey, sounds like a great occasion. Lovely photo. Are the Rioja wines available in S.A.?
