Two good value Marlborough wines from Majestic

My favourite two wines from our casual wine club last week were both from Marlborough in New Zealand.

The Ned Sauvignon Blanc

The Ned Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Waihopai River Marlborough

Excellent, crisp and clean as you’d expect from Sauvignon Blanc from the land of the Hobbits, but extremely well rounded. I am not a big Sauvignon Blanc fan and generally find them one-dimensional acid bombs. But this has grassy herb character and a bit of tannin along with good acidity. This is complemented by delicious fruit flavours too, which gives it a richer mouthfeel without being all ‘fruit salady’.

I’d be happy to drink a bottle of this with my barbecued chicken when (if) the English summer decides to make an appearance.

Brancott Estate Marlborough Pinot Noir 2011

Brancott Estate Pinot NoirBrancott Estate delivers good value across the wines that I have tried from them, usually coming in at under £10 a bottle. The Sauvignon Blanc is great and this red was right up my street.

Pinot Noir character when you smell the wine, with some earthiness and the promise of red berries. The fruit flavours are well balanced and there is a crisp acidity running through the wine which stops it getting boring after a few mouthfuls. Yes, it’s a modern commercial style, but done very well and would be a versatile food wine too.
